Legend or Fact?
No,
it’s nothing to do with full moons, urban or rural legends,
or the zodiac. There actually were goats that inspired the
name – two pygmy goats named Never and Epernay. Back
when I lived in Oregon, there were massive and thorny blackberry
bushes in the backyard that needed to be curtailed. It was
suggested that pygmy goats were the answer – they eat
anything (really, it’s everything). Not only did they
take care of the bushes, but also came to be a source of entertainment
and enjoyment, and when I headed to Santa Barbara, they came
along.
Fast forward to year 2000 when a name was
needed for the winery. Pondering and agonizing over a name
to reflect the wines and the brand, “Yost Wines”
just didn’t seem to do it. I wanted to project fun,
enjoyment, and happiness! How do people name wineries??? Hmmm….they
put their name on the label, their vineyard, their chateau…their
children. Kids! I had kids, and they were all about what I
wanted the brand to be!
The kids, in this case, were those two pygmy
goat pets, who had always inspired me and made me laugh with
their unrestrained spiral loops, flipper turns and straight-legged
leaps. The winery was “launched” with this same
spirit of enthusiasm, and Flying Goat Cellars was born. There
you have it – the legendary facts! |
